Cockatiels can often be beautiful creatures and make great pets for adults and children alike, however before you choose a bird cage for your cockatiel there are a number of things you should consider.

The first thing you should consider is what your cockatiel needs to be comfortable and healthy, if you are unaware of what your cockatiel needs how can you choose the best cage for it.

Cockatiels are very active birds and as such when choosing a cockatiel bird cage you need to make sure that the cage is big enough to ensure that they have enough freedom of movement. It is therefore advisable to steer away from smaller cockatiel bird cages and always choose a larger cage. Cockatiels are also very fond of rummaging on the floor of their cage for food, it is therefore very important that you should opt for a cockatiel cage that has a minimum floor space of 24″ x 24″ even bigger if you can afford it. The larger the floor space your cockatiel cage has the happier your cockatiel will be, you needn’t worry too much about the height of the cage overall floor space is far more important to your cockatiel.

Cleaning Your Cockatiel Bird Cage

When choosing your cockatiel bird cage you need to take into consideration how easy the cage will be to clean, you should always go for a cage that has a grated bottom with a removable tray beneath it to simplify the cleaning process, ensuring your cockatiel remains in a sanitary and healthy environment is of the utmost importance if you want a healthy and happy cockatiel.

Construction Materials

When choosing your cockatiel bird cage the material that it is constructed from is not really very important, it can be made from; wood, plastic, iron steel or any other material of your choice. What is important is not the material that it is made of but how it is put together, and what the spacing is between the cage bars. You do not want your cockatiel to be able to stick his head between the bars as this can sometimes cause injuries to your bird. There are some very beautiful decorative bird cages available made from all types of materials, and although having a decorative cockatiel cage does not necessarily make your bird any more comfortable they often can add aesthetic beauty to your home.

Shop around for your cockatiel cage

As with anything else it is important that you shop around for your cockatiel bird cage to make sure you get the best price, this job has been made so much easier with the internet. I have also included several links on this page to help you with that process, always make sure you compare the prices from a number of places to make sure you not only get the best cockatiel cage but also you get it at the best price.

Decorative bird cages are often used to enhance the appearance of a room or garden, and do not always house real birds, they often look their best when hung in a garden or patio area, however more and more these days you can find decorative bird cages hung in flats and apartments, where they may house fake parrots or doves as a style statement.

Adding style with a decorative bird cage

The use of decorative bird cages as a style statement is becoming ever more popular and they are available in a number of different materials, bamboo, wood and various types of metal (stainless steel, bronze or copper).

Wooden or bamboo bird cages are often more decorative but should only be used to house fake birds as they are more difficult to keep clean and can become unhygienic if they are used to house a real bird. If you are having your home redesigned by an interior designer you can often get you bird cage designed so that it fits in with the new theme of your home.

If you intend to house a real bird in your decorative bird cage you are probably better served to buy a metal cage of some kind, as this type of cage is more easily maintained. However because this type of cage is usually heavier that its wooden or bamboo counterpart you should make sure that the hook or stand that you are using can carry the extra weight. You should also be careful when choosing the colour of the bird cage, stainless steel quite often will fit in no matter what your colour scheme, however if you go for a bronze or copper coloured cage you should make sure that it will fit in with the colour scheme of your home.

Decorative bird cages often look more attractive when hung on a matching decorative stand, but again the same amount of care should be taken when choosing the stand as you do when choosing the cage. If the cage is going to house a real cockatiel or parrot you need to make sure that cage is big enough so that the birds have enough room. You may also want to add some nice decorative accessories to the cage so that your bird can occupy and exercise itself, such as a swing or a slide.

You need also to be aware that although decorative bird cages that contain real birds are very pleasing to the eye, birds can sometimes be noisy and unless you clean their cages regularly can also cause unpleasant smells around the house. You should therefore choose carefully where you will situate your cage and make sure that you clean the cage at least every other day if not every day.
